What We Know
The Disclosure Day trailer is remarkably restrained about showing its extraterrestrials. We hear them — those otherworldly clicks and guttural sounds from Emily Blunt's hijacked broadcast — but we don't see them.
This restraint is classic Spielberg. Think of how long he withheld the shark in Jaws, or how Close Encounters built to its alien reveal. The mystery is the marketing.
Clues from the Trailer
The Sound
Clicks, static, guttural sounds. Not language as we know it — possibly non-verbal communication or a signal being transmitted through humans.
Broadcast Hijacking
They can take over human technology — and possibly human bodies. This suggests beings capable of interfacing with our systems in ways we don't understand.
Colin Firth's Electrodes
Scientific study of contact. The aliens may interact with human consciousness directly, requiring neural monitoring to understand.
Design Theories
Non-Physical / Energy Beings
The broadcast hijacking and vocal possession suggests beings that exist as signals or consciousness rather than physical forms. They may never be "seen" in a traditional sense.
Classic Humanoid Design
Spielberg's aliens have historically been humanoid (E.T., Close Encounters visitors). He may return to this approach — beings we can emotionally connect with.
Arrival-Style Abstract
Truly alien design — non-humanoid, unlike anything in nature. Geometric, shifting, incomprehensible to human perception.
Terrifying / Monstrous
Given Spielberg's preference for wonder over horror in first contact stories (War of the Worlds excepted), purely terrifying designs seem unlikely.

The Sound Design Clue
Perhaps the most significant hint is that we hear the aliens before we see them. The clicks and sounds from Blunt's broadcast could be:
- Communication: An alien language being broadcast through human hosts
- Signal: Not language at all, but data or coordinates
- Presence: The sound of their consciousness interfacing with our reality
- Warning: An announcement of arrival or intent
